The Community School provides specialized services to children in a six-county area.
Services ranging from early intervention to school age programs are provided by licensed teachers and therapists providing speech, language, occupational and physical therapy.
Our primary goal is to help all children in our care develop to their maximum potential. We individualize each child's service based on his or her need in a nurturing, loving environment.
We serve approximately 78 children during the school year and a total of 80 to 90 during the summer months. In addition, we provide community day care service to qualified children in Independence, Cleburne, Jackson, Stone, Lawrence, Sharp and Izard counties in north central Arkansas. We have been serving the region since 1971.
The school is funded through state and federal programs and local match money is provided through contributions from United Way of Independence County and the Independence County Quorum Court.

Early Intervention Infants and toddlers up to 24 months reveive individualized services through an early intervention program. An experienced, caring staff, carefully selected activities, equipment and toys allow children to learn through exploration and play in a loving, nurturing environment. Communication, feeding skills, socialization and movement are targeted developmental areas.
Children 2 to 3 years of age are served in a transition program uniquely designed for them - not babies any longer, but still needing more flexibility than older preschoolers. The children follow an age appropriate schedule incorporating a weekly theme. This engages the children in active participation while expanding their knowledge of the world around them. This is achieved through hands-on activities in art, music, nature, health, language, movement and more.
Pre-school Four and 5 year olds are served together in a program geared toward helping them prepare for a successful kindergarten experience. One of the school's goals is for all the preschoolers to go to public school kindergarten. Therefore, emphasis is placed on obtaining the skills they will need in kindergarten. Additionally, the curriculum is designed to promote interest and joy in learning, to encourage independent work and provide stimulating activities in all developmental and pre-academic areas.
School Age The school age component consists of primary and secondary classrooms designed to maximize the educational opportunities for students with disabilities through technology, adaptive equipment, one-on-one instruction and management of medical needs. Both age groups have access to state-of-the-art computer systems that enhance educational, communication and pre-vocational training, as well as an array of augmentative communication devices and classroom adaptations/modifications.
The secondary students follow a community based instruction program, which allows students to learn about and access the community in real life situations and prepare for adulthood as capable, productive members of the community. It is our sincere desire to see our students become the very best they can be.
When you make the Community School your school, your child will enjoy a free lunch and snack program plus transportation to and from schoool.
